Team Building Paradox

I’m often asked “What do you do for living?” and my answer “I am in team building business” is usually met with a barrage of questions such as: “So you organize a trip for corporate people?”, “Which venue you normally recommend to your client?”, “What games do prepare?” etc

To be honest, I was once just as confused with the words “team building” when I first got involved in the team building business. At the time, for me, team building was

“Have a team of people playing a game”

Later, I discovered another new sentence..

“Have a team of people play a game, and have them figure out a better way to improve it”

Hence, for me team building was an event, not simply training. (Although it can be claimed under HRDF).

After few years getting involved in other types of training as a multi-level marketing and retail sales trainer. I slowly realized the real meaning of “team building” and improved my team building delivery. This deepened my love for team building and helped me venture into this business again.

What is team building for me?

1. A team building activity is not just a game; all programs should be designed with its own message, and should be skillfully delivered to all participants through a variety of debriefing and sharing sessions.
2. All programs should be well sequenced, and deliberately put it in itinerary, from Ice Breakers, motivating the team, challenging the team, setting goals to achieve self-realization, understanding each team member and working towards a shared vision.
3. All team building programs should come with specific objective to achieve.
4. A team building program is not something hard core or equated to military training (although it can done in this way if needed), it is to get participants to open their hearts and share their insights on the activities, their experiences, their challenges, their solutions and what they feel.
5. It will not serve any purpose if participants do no “sharing from the heart, and the program will just end up scratching the surface of team building.
6. Participants need to be challenged through the activity, and the key to team building is challenging team to think and discover a different solution to these challenges.
7. Safety of participants must be well taken care off.
8. All the experiences they learn from will then be relatable and applicable to their daily working environment.
