What is the meaning of leaders, or leadership? From my point of view, I can easily say that leadership is the action of the leaders leading an organization or a group of people. Leadership is all about arranging and mapping out the right direction for other people in order to “win” as a team or organization. Leaders are not bosses; leaders lead, help, show their people the right way while bosses usually just boss around, instruct without showing the way how to do what. The real question is, are leaders born or made?

My answer would be, leaders are “mostly made”. According to Riggio (2009), a study about leadership stated that only one-third is born and two-thirds are made. This is because to think that all leaders are born does not make sense as this is strongly associated with communication, social groups, skills and the complexity of the processes. Sure, there are some leaders who are born with in-depth leadership traits which predispose them to become leaders. Also, a study suggests that extraversion is related to excellent leadership. However, this does not necessarily mean introverts cannot become leaders. Remember, most of leadership is made, not born. So, if you are aspire to positions of leadership, then the best course is to embark on a leader self-development plan.

True leaders should have the capacity to develop a big vision, which relates to inspire and motivate their team and finally to turn the vision into reality. They should have full passion of what they are doing and the most vital quality is to be able to communicate with their team concerning their experiences and intelligence. Leaders too should be able to inspire and influence their team. This closely relates to communication back again – to inspire and influence is all about outstanding level of communication skills with the team. The ability to influence the team or even the strangers from the internet is you need to set your path right, get clear of what you want and do not forget to guide and help them along the way.

As the leader of a team, you assume responsibility not just for yourself and your work, but for the work, attitude and accomplishments of others, too. The leaders should not only show but also encourage them, answer questions, track progress and provide motivation. This is because their success is your success and their failure is your failure, too. Leaders are also always curious, open-minded and are very invested in their own growth, which they own a desire to constantly learn and grow.

In a nutshell, yes, leaders are mostly made, not born. So whether you are born with the “special traits” or not, if you want to be a leader, you must learn the right way on how to, and this is because either way, you have to work hard to develop and refine the traits you already own or not. Like anything else, leaders are made through hard work.
